The spikey conch things in SMG2 probably act like this would have.

They look the mixture of either a Spiney and I would say a Starfish or maybe a Walrus with the way those hands are spread out like that.
Would assume it spread the arms out to the sides to move underwater.

Its name indicates it was intended to be an underwater species of Troopa, but it clearly is a type of Spiny, not a Troopa. They must have changed it during development before dropping it, like how the stretchy green bulbs are called "Kinoko" (mushrooms) in their file name.
