According to the Wikpedia entry for the Super FX Chip, Star Fox used "scaled 2D bitmaps for lasers, asteroids, and other obstacles, but other objects such as ships are rendered with 3D polygons." This being Wikipedia, though, I suppose it must be taken with a grain of salt.

Vaguely. It's an illusion from distorted polygons. The only examples I can think of offhand outside Super FX games and their ports are some SEGA 32x games like Knuckles Chaotix.

@Doc So the Super FX chip basically makes pseudo-3D models (sort of like Mode 7)?

@Nico There are no models in the game. They're build from pictures of polygons that are squashed and stretched, not vectors. At least, if I recall correctly.
