Realistically speaking, this can't possibly be just a single mesh in-game. I feel they would've made it so that it would gradually draw in and out based on the player's position on the map.

@NebulaInTokyo Almost every 3D Nintendo game I've looked at does it. These collision models are often much lower detail and break the mesh down into simple shapes like cylinders or cubes to save some time when calculating the collisions. Collision models are even more useful nowadays because of the high amount of detail the models can have, you wouldn't want to calculate collisions on those possibly several thousand tris modern games can have.

@NebulaInTokyo: The model has no textures. I rendered it with ambient occlusion to make the details easier to see. Besides, it wouldn't make sense from a game design perspective to have lightmaps be a separate model.

this looks more to be lightmaps than collision, it wouldn't make sense for a game to have a separate model for collision.
